City of the Sun

Style - IPA

Commercial Description:  City of the Sun is a big, fruity, pungent, sticky, delicious IPA. Mosaic & Motueka give it a very fruity hop character, with Simcoe providing enough of a piney backbone to prevent it from going off the deep end. The complex but unobtrusive malt character gives it a medium body and a platform for the saturated hop flavor.

Editor’s Notes:  City of the Sun is the first beer by Modern Times that I have sampled – I have high expectations for any San Diego IPA. As usual, this one delivers. The aroma is awesome, with wonderful tropical fruit notes of pineapple and mango. The taste is similar, but the main taste element actually is grapefruit. Pineapple also is there in spades, with some melon joining in in the finish. There really isn’t any noteworthy presence of malt, and that is more than okay. It’s a hop adventure – one that you are sure to enjoy immensely. There isn’t a noteworthy jolt of bitterness, but there is enough there that you don’t miss it (much). Definitely pick up some City of the Sun IPA if you get the chance.
