The Bollocks

Style - Double IPA

Commercial Description: We love ipa. Especially big hoppy ones. This west coast style imperial India pale ale is not messing around. At 12%abv and 110 ibu’s, it’s the liquid equivalent of Lenny in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Gently tending rabbits then suddenly….snap, it’s a whirlwind of crazy. Big citrusy aromatics, solid bitter backbone, and candy-like finish.

Editor’s Notes:  This is a big one. Unfortunately the thing I was hoping would be the biggest element of the beer (hops) is its smallest – at least relative to other Double IPAs. The aroma offers up a sugary malt focus with alcohol lurking in the background. The taste leads with caramel malt, but an alcohol sting joins in after only a second or two. Unfortunately I can’t find much of a hop delivery at all – either in flavor or bitterness. The strong presence of alcohol throughout the sip makes you appreciate what the brewers at places like Knee Deep Brewing can do; it takes rare talent to create Double or “Triple” IPAs with ABVs over 10% that have great hop flavor and bitterness without alcohol distraction. You might look for The Bollocks if you are new to IPAs and looking for a big beer. Otherwise you might look for something that tastes a bit more like an IPA.
