Beer Camp West Coast

Style - Double IPA

Commercial Description:  Heading to most states in limited quantities, the Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA clocks in at 8.5% ABV and features five hop varieties, two of which went into Sierra Nevada’s “Hop Torpedo” dry-hopping device and impart hints of grapefruit and a floral note that recalls orange blossom. A light malt body and dry finish complement the bold hop profile.

Editor’s Notes:  I’m really excited to have Sierra Nevada in Mills Creek, NC, and their Beer Camp Across America beers and festivals this summer (2014) are both impressive and really cool. They have developed 13 new beers this summer: 12 collaborations with some of the best brewers in the country and 1 that they came up with by themselves to kick off the festivities. Beer Camp West Coast Double IPA is the kick-off beer. Unfortunately I am a little disappointed with it, but not enough to detract from what they are doing overall. The aroma is good but not great – citrus hops with a dash of sweet malt and a pinch of Belgian skunk. The taste is better than the aroma, with orange and mango hops dancing on top of a base of caramel malt. There really isn’t a Belgian lean in the taste, which is fine by me. The bitter bite is serious and brings on a nice cheek pucker; the finish is the strength of the beer. I’m not sure I would label this a West Coast Double IPA, as it could use a bit more hop flavor to deserve that categorization. However, it is another solid delivery from Sierra Nevada.
