Go To

Style - IPA

Commercial Description:  Since Day One, we’ve been abundantly forthright and fully transparent about our lust for hops. It’s led us to craft many an IPA, most of them imperial—some intense for their time and all timeless in their intensity. For Stone Go To IPA, we are embracing our hop obsession in a new way, funneling an abundance of lupulin-borne bitterness into a “session” IPA delivering all the fruity, piney character of a much bigger IPA. To accomplish this, we employed “hop bursting,” a new technique wherein an irrational amount of hops is added during the final phase of the brewing process to coax out extreme flavors and aromas while also imparting a burst of desirably pleasant bitterness. The result is an Alpha-acid-rich beer that fans can enjoy more of without missing out on the assertive hop character you, like us, crave. So, sit back and go two with your new everyday go-to IPA and bask along with us in the glory of the almighty hop.

Editor’s Notes:  Generally speaking I’m not a huge fan of “session IPAs”, so I haven’t gone out of my way in the last 4 months (since March 2014) to sample Stone’s first session IPA, Go To IPA. As it turns out, that was a poor decision. Go To is very good and joins with other session IPAs such as Pizza Port’s Ponto, Rough Draft’s Weekday, and Lagunitas’ DayTime to bring legitimacy to this style of IPAs. As of this moment I am officially dropping my bias against session IPAs! Go To’s aroma is of fragrant tropical fruit – it smells great. The taste leads with orange hops, with pineapple hops showing up in the middle of the sip. As you swallow grapefruit hops make a big statement and complement a very strong jolt of bitterness that strengthens until it hits its apex a few seconds after you swallow. Go To is a very good IPA, and excellent if you are planning to have more than a couple. I look forward to enjoying Go To - and other session IPAs – more often in the future.
