The Oracle

Style - Double IPA

Commercial Description:  Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the aromatic punch of dry-hop sessions with hop varieties from the Pacific Northwest. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.

Editor’s Notes:  You would think that Bell’s Brewery, maker of ultra-successful Two Hearted Ale and the most hyped IPA in existence, Hopslam, would make more IPAs. The Oracle is only their 3rd widely distributed IPA, but like Hopslam it is not easy to source – maybe even more difficult. And like Hopslam, it is a damn fine beer. The aroma is of citrus hops with sweet malt taking a secondary position; I am hoping at this point that there is more of a hop presence in the taste than in the aroma. No problem there - the taste is unbelievable! Orange, lemon, and mango hops make the first impression and are joined by a stabilizing caramel malt about halfway through the sip. Gargantuan bitterness explodes on your tongue right after the caramel malt comes on the scene, and accentuates both the hop and malt flavors. After you swallow you just sit back and marvel at the supernova of flavors and bitterness swirling on your taste buds. At the beginning of the pour you notice a slight alcohol burn after you swallow, but the bitterness stamps out that fire after the first couple of sips. As far as I am concerned this is one of those rare beers that you buy as much of whenever you can; I’m not sure how Bell’s has two such beers. That proves my original hypothesis: we need more IPAs from Bell’s!
