Hopslam

Style - Double IPA

Commercial Description:  Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repetoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.

Editor’s Notes:  Hopslam’s reputation precedes it;  there is more of a buzz around Hopslam than any other IPA I know. Good story: when I went to my favorite bottle shop last February there was a huge sign saying “No – we don’t have Hopslam!”. After I picked out a few things and was checking out the owner whispered “Hey – you want some Hopslam?”. You’ve got to know the right people to get this beer! It absolutely didn’t disappoint. The label lets you know that this Double IPA will be a bit different, as it is “brewed with honey”. The aroma is wonderful with citrus and pine leading the way and the sweet smell of honey in the background. The taste is also fantastic, with delicious grapefruit flavor partially balanced by bready malt and sweet honey. The hop bitterness jumps your tongue at the beginning of the sip and doesn’t let up until long after you swallow. The honey butts in here and there, and leaves a nice, sweet offset to the hops in the finish.  This is a great, interesting, drinkable and memorable Double IPA. Believe the hype!

Gotta give this beer 100 across the board because it is well deserved. To me it set the bar for all other Double IPAs. While others may be more bitter and hoppier, this one is smoother and very drinkable. The alcohol creeps up on you because the beer is so smooth and enjoyable.

Bell’s Hopslam lives up to the hype! The awesome aromas of piney hops, citrus, light honey, yes! The combination of bitterness and sweetness makes this one of the smoothest DIPA’s I have ever had. Beware, the ABV of 10% this beer with the light honey for balance is so drinkable, I had three the other night, WOW!
