Sculpin

Style - IPA

Commercial Description: The Sculpin is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. It showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup 2010 in the International Pale Ale category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on it’s fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the tastiest. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Editor’s Notes:  Sculpin is legendary – and there’s a good reason for the hype surrounding this beer. It pours a nice amber color and smells unbelievable with all kinds of citrus and tropical fruit notes. The taste is smooth but accentuated by hop bitterness throughout the sip. Pineapple, orange, and mango flavors jump your taste buds and hold firm. The finish is nice and dry, and again the bitterness is magnificent; the cheek pucker starts after a sip or two and snowballs from there. I can’t imagine any IPA lover being disappointed with this wonderful beer – it is and always will be a Top 5 IPA for me!

Pours amber, but with minimal head. Nice aroma, with strong grapefruit overtones. Taste is well balanced, with strong hops bitterness, some citrusy flavors. Slightly bitter aftertaste. This is a very good IPA, but i just can’t put it in the same class as Green Flash or Stone.

I sat down to play Bioshock Infinite on my PS3, I poured a glass of Sculpin and started to play. I had a drink and put it back down, I had to pause game and enjoy more of this sweet nectar of the gods. With a great aroma of grapefruit and hops this beer tastes as good as it smells. The hops are not overpowering which adds to its drinkablity. Sculin is the best IPA I have ever tried and would recommend it to anyone from a novice to an experienced IPA drinker.

This beer truly lives up to the hype. The aroma is fantastic. What I loved most about this beer is that you instantly get the great bitter hop taste that I love and admire. However, it is followed by a smooth citrusy after taste. Not overpowering at all, just a fantastic translation. Anyone who loves IPAs will appreciate the superb blend of crisp hops that work so well together. I would highly suggest this IPA to anyone. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
